2009 Year of the Ox looking very un-bullish for President Barack Obama, so how to improve?

If the global economy fails to recover in 2009, the housing bubble or credit crunch may not be to blame. It could be a lack of fire.
Chinese fortunetellers say fire _ one of the five elements mystics believe form the basis of the universe _ is essential to financial well-being. And fire is nowhere to be found in the mythology of this coming Year of the Ox, the Chinese lunar year that begins Monday.
"Fire is the driving force behind economic growth. Without it, the market lacks momentum," said Raymond Lo, a Hong Kong master of feng shui, the ancient Chinese practice of trying to achieve health, harmony and prosperity through building design, the placement of objects and auspicious dates and numbers.
Chinese soothsayers see a deepening recession, millions more losing their jobs, and stocks and home prices continuing to fall. That's more or less in line with what some economists are predicting, but some fortunetellers are throwing in other dire predictions _ massive earthquakes, rising U.S.-Russian tensions and trouble for President Barack Obama.
Obama, born in the Year of the Ox, is taking office in a particularly bad year for his Chinese astrological sign. The ox sign is in direct conflict this year with a traditional Chinese divinity called the "God of Year," considered a bad omen. Obama also is the 44th president, a number the Chinese deem extremely unlucky, because "four" is pronounced the same as "death" in Chinese.
"The new U.S. president is not having good luck this year. His honeymoon will only be short-lived," said fortuneteller Alion Yeo, predicting Obama may even face impeachment in his first year in office. "The Year of the Ox looks slightly better and less dire than last year, but it will still be bumpy."
Yeo also predicted that the U.S. mortgage crisis would worsen and the stock market would plunge to new lows.
But Malaysian numerologist Weng Shi Ming suggested Obama's birth year would offset his bad luck. Weng said the symmetry of 1961 is "the perfect mix of ying and yang," rendering Obama "immune to the effects of 44."
The ox, one of 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac, symbolizes calm, hard work, resolve and tenacity. According to legend, the ox allowed the cunning rat to ride on its head in a race to determine the animals' order. Shortly before the ox crossed the finish line, the rat leaped off to claim victory. The Year of the Rat was marked in 2008.
Among the world's luminaries born in the Year of the Ox: former U.S. President Richard Nixon (1913), former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher (1925), Princess Diana (1961), and Hollywood actors George Clooney (1961) and Richard Gere (1949).
The lunar new year is the biggest annual festival for ethnic Chinese, who make up about one-fifth of the world's population. It is a time of lavish spending, when loved ones exchange "hong bao," or red envelopes stuffed with money. But this year's festivities will likely be more subdued amid the economic slump.
"What's important is that the family has a good time. There's no need to overspend," said Ooi Lee Mui, a Malaysian housewife shopping in Kuala Lumpur's Chinatown, where the season's gold lanterns and bright-hued flowers bedecked streets and stores.
Joey Yap, a feng shui expert in Malaysia, saw no economic recovery before 2010.
"It will be a daunting year. We haven't really reached the peak of the problems yet," Yap said. "We haven't tasted the main dish, and will most likely experience it during the second half of the year."
But feng shui master Lo saw a glimmer of hope. The combination of two elements changes every lunar year, and this time it's two earths, the element that represents harmony and peace. Not since 1949, when the world order was settling down after World War II, has an Ox Year seen two earth signs.
"It is a year for healing ... from the turbulent time the world has experienced," Lo said.

What's your New Year Resolution?

2008 is history.
With 2009 here, you might still be wrapped up in the new year 'fun mood'.
Still, I have to ask you ONE tough question...Did 'last year' gave you what you desired when it comes to dating, career, relationship, wealth and life?
If yes... sweet!
But if there're still struggles in that area, I believe your intention is to make things different this year. Yet, before you even scribble a single word under the "wealth and dating" category of your new year resolution, there's something to warn...
I came across a piece of news which states - when people were to set resolutions at the beginning of the year, most would FORGET what they set for themselves when March comes (let alone accomplishing that resolution).
Dark news? Yep, but don't worry... the part about how to 'hack'this situation is coming up.
My own take on why new year resolution loses its effectiveness is because - a resolution is just a 'plain statement'.
I mean consider these -
"I want to make 3 times more money this year"
"I decide to get a super-gorgeous girlfriend or boyfriend who is also intelligent"
"I commit to increase my wealth in 2009"
What's wrong with the above?
For a start, they lack some type of "support structure" to pull them off successfully.
Such a resolution is just a plain statement, NOT a plan.
It's like a skeleton, but there's no muscles or blood to ensure it functions properly.
Which is why -Instead of using any tired old resolution, enhance it with spiritual help using an amulet.
Be inspired, wear your amulet with faith and belief, make a wish and follow the path to carry out your new year resolution.
What better way then to wear a good amulet and having the faith and confidence to do what you wish to do in life.
The message is - make 2009 the year where you won't allow yourself to 'sweep things under the carpet'.
Make this the year where you FACE the essential things required to achieve your desired outcome in life.

Want to know secrets to increasing your luck?

In a ritual at a temple in Nakhon Nayok, Thailand, visitors lie in a coffin as monks chant for them to be cleansed and reborn.
NAKHON NAYOK, Thailand — It is the ultimate in second chances: a Buddhist temple here offers, for a small fee, an opportunity to die, rise up again newborn and make a fresh start in life.
Nine big pink coffins dominate the grand hall of the temple, and every day hundreds of people take their turns climbing in for a few moments as monks chant a dirge. Then, at a command, the visitors clamber out again cleansed — they believe — of the past.
It is a renewal for our times, as recent economic hardship brings uncertainty and people try seeking a bailout on life. In growing numbers, they come here from around Thailand to join what has become an assembly line of resurrection.
“When the economy is down, we latch our hopes onto some supernatural power,” said Ekachai Uekrongtham, the writer-director whose movie “The Coffin” is in Thai cinemas now with a plot revolving around such funerals for the living.
“When I went in I felt warm, and when I came out I felt released,” said Nual Chaichamni, 52, a masseuse who visited recently and who said she liked the feeling so much that she had done it six times.
“As I lay there and listened to the chanting of the monks, I felt relaxed,” she said. “When I got up, I was thinking of good things, thinking of the Buddha image in the hall. I felt good.”

Visitors taking part in the daily resurrection ceremonies at the temple, Wat Prommanee, praying from their temporary coffins.
Buddhism in Thailand can take unexpected forms, embracing animist superstition, magical practices — and the entrepreneurial spirit of many senior monks. Many Thais say that the true spirit of Buddhism is being lost.
Many temples have become centers of enterprise that parallel Thailand’s economic growth over the past few decades, selling good-luck amulets, holding boisterous fairs and telling fortunes.
This temple, Wat Prommanee, 66 miles northeast of Bangkok, has offered its unusual daily resurrection service for more than three years, and its clientele keeps growing, said an attendant, Pradap Butcharerm, 69.
On weekends as many as 700 people a day pay 180 baht each, a little more than $5, for the ceremony and much more for amulets that are auctioned off by temple acolytes.
“We have only 50 of these, a limited edition, the price is up to you!” they cry. “Twenty baht, 50 baht, did I hear 300 baht? Someone has run into luck.” As the number of visitors has grown, their dip into the supernatural has become more perfunctory; now a monk with a bullhorn herds worshipers through the row of coffins, nine at a time.
Like Charlie Chaplin on an out-of-control assembly line, they follow the monks’ commands: into the coffin, down on their backs, eyes closed, shroud on, shroud off, up on their feet, quick prayer and scramble out into a new life.
The whole process takes a minute and a half. The next group of nine is waiting.
A cardboard sign warns visitors not to stand behind the coffins, where bad karma sucked from the “dying” devotees may still be hovering.
The rebirth ceremony is unusual, but not surprising, said Suwannan Sathta-Anand, an associate professor of philosophy at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok.
“These days, a lot of people in Thai society are creating new kinds of rituals and practices to suit whatever purposes they have,” she said.
With the hierarchy of organized Buddhism slow to adapt to changing times, she said, “people are looking for their own expression of Buddhism that could be relevant to their lives.”
Along with the religion of their past, a tide of modern capitalism has seized the imagination of Thais as their country has rapidly developed in the past three decades.
Two years ago, Thailand was gripped by a frenzy for a magical amulet called Jatukam that sold in several versions with unambiguous names like “Super Rich,” “Immediately Rich,” “Rich Without Reason” and “Miracle Rich.”
The people who come to be reborn here at Wat Prommanee are seeking help for many of the ailments and aspirations of life.
Jirapat Winarungruang, 37, a lawyer, came one recent day to complete a transformation that he began four years ago when he changed his name from the less auspicious Suthep Wina. His new name includes the suffix rungruang, which means prosperity.
Fifty percent of a person’s destiny is determined by his name, Mr. Jirapat said, and the other 50 percent by his date of birth. When he arose from the coffin, born again, he said, the last vestiges of the old Suthep Wina would be gone.
Woraphot Sriboonyang, 30, an engineer, said he had come with Mr. Jirapat and four other family members to rid himself of bad karma. Within just a few weeks, he said, he had suffered a break-in and a bad car accident. He wanted his run of bad luck to stop at two.
Sangkhom Thani, 37, who sells subsidized food for the government, said he hoped for luck in business and relief for his aching back and knees. “If I lie down in the coffin, it will give me a new lease on life,” he said as he examined an expensive new amulet.
Chalida Muansawang, 33, a hairdresser, brought her 12-year-old daughter, Saksithorn, in the hope that a few moments in a coffin would help cure her hyperactivity.
“I’m excited and a little bit scared,” said the girl, who proceeded bravely through the process with her mother lying next to her in an adjacent coffin.
As the morning’s ceremony ended, a long line had already formed for the afternoon shift. Among the newcomers was the entire 36-man Royal Thai Army soccer team, in bright red jerseys, preparing for a match the next day.
“We’ll lie in the coffins and then we’ll go to practice,” said one of the players, Nippon Khamthong, 22. Asked what he hoped his rebirth would bring him, he said, “We just want to win tomorrow.”

Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej is a collector of Buddha amulets and Buddha images
SAMAK HEADS TO TEMPLE TO MAKE MERIT, LIFT SPIRITS
Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej has steadfastly refused to bow to demands by the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) for him to resign and dissolve parliament. He says such actions would not solve the country's problems. There have been whispers that Mr Samak has been searching for answers at a temple.
All was quiet at his residence on Soi Navamin 81 yesterday.
Security was still tight, even though there were no students turning up to clamour for his resignation, as on Thursday.
The prime minister had no official functions to attend to yesterday. But about 10am, he was seen leaving his house in his car, with his entourage of security guards in tow.
He took the expressway at Lat Phrao and turned left at Soi Choke Chai 4.
Reporters were following him when his security guards thwarted their efforts to find out exactly where he was heading.
It was reported that Mr Samak might have gone to a temple to make merit in what many saw as a bid to lift his sagging morale in the face of mounting pressure from critics demanding his ouster.
People close to Mr Samak confirmed he often sought solace in temples and gave offerings in merit-making ceremonies when his morale was low.
Associates said he is a collector of Buddha amulets and Buddha images.
He also has Buddha images crafted and gives them to others as gifts. Perhaps the most famous Buddha image is called phra pairee pinas (Defeating the enemies).
''At social functions, Mr Samak usually gives phra pairee pinas images as a token of his appreciation,'' a source close to the prime minister said.
The source added at wedding receptions, the brides usually receive a statue of phra siam thewathirat (The Lord Protector of Siam) from Mr Samak.
Lately, many astrological forecasts have spelled trouble for him.
According to former senator Boonlert Pairin, who is a well-known astrologer, the stars of Mr Samak showed that he would find himself in great trouble and it is highly likely that he could lose his position as prime minister. It is believed that the more such gloomy predictions keep coming up, the more he will try to seek ways to ward off bad luck.
When Mr Samak was sworn in as prime minister, astrologers forecast that he would not last long in office, prompting angry responses from him.
After that, however, he was seen attending a ceremony worshipping Rahu, the god of darkness, arranged by a temple near Hua Lamphong.

OLYMPIC Thai athletes given Luang Pu Tuad amulets to boost morale.

Urges competitors to do their best.
Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhornon on 28 Jul 08, urged the Olympic athletes to give their all to show to the world that Thais are capable of competing at this level.
The athletes and officials were granted an audience with the Princess at Chitralada Palace's Dusidalai Pavilion.
The Princess told the delegation, led by Tourism and Sports Minister Weerasak Kohsurat, that the Olympics was the greatest sporting event in the world.
Although some in the 2008 Olympic delegation have attended the Games on several occasions, they receive new experience every time, Her Royal Highness said.
"You should use this occasion to show to Thais and foreigners how capable Thai athletes are," said the Princess.
"You should carry out your duty to the best of your ability. Winning or losing is not important. I hope you meet what you want to meet and avoid what you want to avoid."
The Princess gave 200 Luang Poo Thuad amulets to Weerasak for him to hand them to the delegation to help boost their morale and give them confidence.
Her Royal Highness will attend the Beijing Games' opening ceremony on August 8 and will watch Premsiri Bunpithak and Pensiri Laosirikul compete in weightlifting the next day.
The Princess conversed with the athletes and officials particularly Athens Games weighlifting champion Pawina Thongsuk, who officially retired from the national side in a farewell party on Sunday. Pawina paid respect to the Princess who sent her a bouquet of flowers to Sunday's party.
The Princess asked Thai delegation chief Thana Chaiprasit who will carry the Thai flag during the opening ceremony and Thana said boxer Worapoj Petchkoom, a silver medallist at the 2004 Games, is assigned to do the job.
She was also keen to know about the number of the Thai athletes at the 2008 Games, their preparations and accomodation as well as the weather in Beijing.
Gen Yutthasak Sasiprapha said the delegation felt grateful to the Princess who gave them some wise words.
Thana said it was an honour for the contingent to have been granted an audience with Her Royal Highness. "We feel grateful. This boosts our morale," he said.
Thana, who was in Beijing at the weekend, said the Athletes' Village was ready and athletes from some countries had already stayed there.
There will be 51 Thai athletes at the 2008 Olympics who are expected to win two gold medals. Thailand won three gold, one silver and four bronze medals at the Athens Olympics.
According to Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej, the Princess will cook a meal for the Thai delegation during her stay in Beijing.

Edison Chen seek help from White Dragon King (Bai Long Wang)

The scandal
The Edison Chen photo scandal involved the illegal distribution over the Internet of intimate and private photographs of Hong Kong actor Edison Chen with various women, including actresses Gillian Chung, Bobo Chan, and Cecilia Cheung. The scandal shook the Hong Kong entertainment industry in early 2008 and received high profile media attention locally and around the world. Many local newspapers relegated coverage of the 2008 Chinese winter storms to secondary prominence during Chinese new year; Apple daily headlined the story consecutively from29 Jan to 18 Feb.
Despite enlisting the assistance of Interpol, the Hong kong police were unable to stem the spread of the photographs. As of 12 Feb 08, ten people were arrested in connection with the distribution of the photographs. The police crackdown raised questions over violations of the privacy and free speech rights of Internet users. The manner in which actors, their management, and the police handled the situation, in turn, made those arrested into heroes and martyrs for some Internet users.
On 21 Feb, Chen admitted being the author and copyright owner of most of the photographs. He stated that the private photographs had been stolen and published illegally without his consent . He made a public apology, especially to the female victims involved, and also announced that he would "step away indefinitely" from the Hong Kong entertainment industry.
The damage
On 5 Feb 08 , Chen was pulled from the upcoming Stephen Fung movie Jump as a result of the scandal. On 10 Feb 08, it was reported that credit card company Manhattan Titanium has withdrawn all advertisements featuring Chen.
Upon his return to Hong Kong on 21 Feb, a hundred police officers were present throughout the press conference at the HITEC centre, and some citizens complained about the waste of manpower. The police argued that their strong presence was essential to maintain public order due to the great public and media interest in the case.
The Traids reportedly offered a HK$500,000 reward to anybody who hacked off Edison Chen's hand. This contributed to fears for Edison's safety upon his return, and heavy police protection.
The LA Times reported that Pepsi China, Standard Chartered Bank, Samung , Levi's and the Hong Kong Metro, has dropped or declined to renew ad campaigns involving Chen.
Seeking help from White Dragon King Temple (Bai Long Wang)
Back in 2003, Edison chen and Famous Hong kong actor Tony Leung Chiu Wai went to visit the white dragon temple in Thailand and receive the blessing and advise from Bai long wang himself.
During the recent scandals , there were reports that Edison Chen was feeling lost and need to seek help. He informed his manager to contact the master Bai long wang for advise and help.
It was reported that Bai long wang told Edison Chen's manager that regarding the scandal issue of Edison Chen, he does not want to speak and has no comments on him.
Guess Edison Chen did not follow the great master advise back in the early days.

Bai long wang (white dragon king) temple in 5 Surasak Sri Racha, Chonburi(Thailand)
Master kim Nam (Bai long wang)
Known to the Hong Kong entertainment industry as a living god.
Many Hong kong and taiwan celebrities including Andy lau, kelly Chen, Tony leung etc, went to seek advise and blessing from the great Bai long wang himself.
Usually people who visited Bai long wang temple, wore all white to show respect.

Wisakha Bucha Day
.jpg)
Pattaya City gets ready to celebrate Wisakha Bucha on May 19
Pattaya, Thailand -- Pattaya City is making preparations for Buddhism‘s most important festival, Wisakha Bucha Day, May 19, 2008, (the anniversary of the Lord Buddha‘s birth, enlightenment and entry into nirvana, or paranirvana, to be precise) by holding a Meditational Run and Procession.
The activities will focus on observing the five Buddhist commandments and refraining from all vice. There will be collaboration between Pattaya City Council, clubs, societies and the people of Pattaya to celebrate the event. Activities will start at 4.30 pm, with sixty Buddhist monks being invited to pray for the auspicious ceremony, with a dedication to His Majesty the King on the occasion of his 80th birthday. After the prayers and a sermon at around 5pm, athletes will start a Meditational Run and Walk.
The winner will receive a trophy and any participants who reach the finish line will receive a sacred coin and a Dharma book, to be presented by Mayor of Pattaya City. There will also be a Buddhist ceremony afterward at around 6.30 pm
In addition, all participants and Buddhist monks will join in procession to walk from Pattaya Hill Public Garden to Chai Mongkol Temple, where the procession will circumambulate (circle) the temple three time, with each carrying flowers, three glowing incense sticks and a lit candle in silent homage to the Triple Gem, i.e. Buddha (the Great Teacher), the Dhamma (the Truth) and the Sangha (the community of followers).
This triple circumambulation ceremony will be repeated at all the wats (temples) throughout Thailand and is a marvellous opportunity to make merit. Wisakha Bucha (or Puja) Day, falls on the full moon of the 6th lunar month. Agriculturally, it is the season of seeding and ploughing, and on this day the workers leave the fields to participate in the circumambulation ceremony. Shortly after transplanting is completed, the rainy season, with its annual monsoons, arrives to inundate the farmland. Daily rainfall refreshes the fields and much of the family's time becomes occupied with the holy Rains Retreat (Phasa in Thai), observances.
During the annual, three-month Rains Retreat, Buddhist monks remain in their monasteries overnight. In a tradition which predates Buddhism, in Ancient India the monks gave up their itinerant habits and instead remained in permanent dwellings, avoiding travel across fields so as not to tread on the young plants In deference to popular opinion, the Buddha decreed that his follows should also abide by this ancient tradition.
This marked a movement towards a more permanent, communal life and the establishment of Buddhist monasteries and temples, especially in countries to which the young religion had spread.
Phansa (lent) is a time of spiritual practice; a time to emulate the Buddha. Specifically, it concentrates on Bhavana (meditation) or development of the mind, working from a base of morality (Sila), together with the development of concentration (Samadhi) and mindfulness (Sati). This practice enabled Siddhattha Gotama to become a self-awakened Buddha and many of his noble disciples to become Arhats.
Accordingly, ever since it has been the period, when the monkhood becomes more spiritual vigorous, meditating, studying and teaching more. It is also the time young men enter the monkhood to become temporarily ordained and receive spiritual training, to gain merit for themselves and their parents, and achieve maturity, after which marriageable girls will regard them as fit persons to marry.
The Buddhist ordination is a mixture of religious solemnity, merit-making and boisterous celebration, reflecting a Thai belief that the three most important events of a man's life are his birth, ordination and marriage. Socially, the ordination of the young novice-monks is an opportunity for the whole village to join in celebration. Village monks represent the presiding chapter and act as preceptors. Villagers gain merit and they and small children accompany the tonsured, white-robed candidates for monkhood in a lively procession to the monastery, marked by joyous dancing and deep beat of long drums.
Laymen, too, during this traditional holy season, attempt to be more conscientious in following the Buddha's precepts, renouncing hard liquor, cigarettes and other vices, and try to be better people and donate both financial and physical support to their local monasteries.

Temple Thieves Get Daring
Temple thieves get daring
An increase in robberies of valuable artifacts from ancient temples in the former capital city are driving monk to despair.
One recent heist which shocked Buddhists the most was the removal of gold foil from two large reclining buddha images - Phra BuddhasaiyartMongkol Sanpetch and Phra Buddhasaiyart MongkolChinawat- at Bang Plamaw temple in tambonNamtao of Ayutthaya's Bang Ban district. The robbers also extracted gold from the gates of the temple 's ordination hall.
Temple abbot Phra Maha Prasert Jantawiro, 53, said losses were put at 15 million baht.
Temple robberies mostly invlove the thef of ancient Buddha images and valuables such as Dharma cabinets and brass accessories. Few Stolen goods are ever retrieved.
Four other robberies took place at Wat Choengtha, Wat Bamrungtham, Wat Kudilai, and Wat Bang Plamaw over a period of two months in Ayutthaya.
Phra Mali Thammathaso, the 51 year old acting abbot of Wat Cheongtha, said thieves stole eight sema- leaf like boundary stones - from around the temple's old ordination hall in the early hour of Jan 02 this year.
"The sema are priceless. They were with the temple for ages," the monk said.
Thieves also broke inot the ordination hall late last year but did not get anything, he said.
"Everything had been stolen over the past 10 years, so there was nothing else left in the hall to take," he said. Most temples possessing precious artifacts have to take care of their property themselves.

They resort to mundance tactics, such as replacing ancient artifacts with cheap objects. Many temple have placed coffee containers as a subsitute for brass vases, steel plates for gongs, and earthenware pots for joss-stick holders.
Phra Yanatrailok, secrety to chief of the Ayutthaya Sanga Office, has warned monks in more than 400 temples in Ayutthaya, to be alert for robberies. He advises monk to take photographs of all valuable objects and help police and villagers guard their compunds.
